Artistic Development at The Place

The Place in London runs a variety of professional artistic development workshops throughout the year.



The Place is running a series of classes for professional dancers.

These classes are for professional dancers who have completed full-time contemporary dance training and may be in between projects. Artist Development can recommend alternative classes for those who are not at this level. If you have any doubts as to whether these classes are suitable for you or would like to be put on the mailing list please contact Artist Development on 020 7121 1040.

Class numbers are limited so please make yourself known to the Artist Development representative on arrival. The maximum number of participants per class is 25 or 30.

Monday - Friday, 09.00 – 10.30

The classes takes place in Studio 8 and the space is open from 8.30am. Please arrive early to secure your place in class. Registration starts no later than
8.45am. Latecomers will not be admitted after 9.15am. Participants must vacate the studio by 10.45am

5 - 9 January
Joanna O’Keefe
Joanna has worked for many years with both the Danish choreographer Kim Brandstrup and the Belgian choreographer Michele Anne de Mey creating roles in new works and performing internationally. She is currently rehearsal director for the reprise of ‘Sinfonia Eroica’ (a piece by Michele Anne de Mey) which is touring Europe. Joanna will give a class loosely based on Cunningham technique with focus on tools for performance. The class includes choreographic material with the aim to enhance dynamics in phrasing, awareness of spatial possibilities and contrast in movement and physicality.

12 - 16 January
Hilary Stainsby
Hilary has worked as a London based dancer for nearly 10 years. She has performed with various companies including Bedlam, Tilted Productions, Tom Dale and was a member of Random Dance for 6 years. Her teaching includes classes for London Contemporary Dance School, Laban and Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Hilary was a dancer for
the Jerwood Bank Project at Siobhan Davies Studios in 2007.

Her class is based on influences from release technique, and aims to encourage a sense of awareness and efficiency as well as physical articulacy. Within this framework she hopes to deliver a movement language which is as complex and challenging as it is dynamic and fun.

19 - 23 January
Caroline Lofthouse
Caroline trained at LCDS graduating in 1997. Since then she has performed extensively with Loop Dance Company and has also danced with Bedlam and Physical Recall. Caroline teaches a Release-based class, which emphasises healthy alignment and whole body connectivity. Use of the floor, weight and momentum are explored leading to dynamic combinations and travelling sequences. Caroline is a Lecturer in Dance at Kingston University and has an MA in Dance Training and Education.

26 - 30 January
Two a Week
Wayne Parsons trained at LCDS and since graduating has worked for SmallPetitKlein, Diversions and is currently a member of Richard Alston Dance Company. His class
plays between technical precision and a released, weighty sense of fluidity that incorporates floor work. Rachael Mossomtrained at Middlesex University and London Studio Centre. She has performed for Henri Oguike Dance Company, Will Tuckett and Liz Lea. Rachael was commissioned for The Place Prize 2008 in collaboration with Charlotte Eatock. Her classes begin with elements of Cunningham technique and will explore qualities of dynamics, release and shifting the body through space.

2 - 6 February
Ben Ash
Ben is a co-director of the Dog Kennel Hill Project, a creative collaborative that aims to make work that suprises and intrigues. Ben has worked with many
choreographers and companies in the UK and taught students, professionals and companies nationally and internationally. The class will begin with cultivating our
awareness, lightly working with our attention to the body's pathways and connections. We'll open the connection into the ground to support us in space and
progress through articulated patterns to use weight and flow, culminating in dynamic dancing in space.

9 - 13 February
Lyndsey McConville
Lyndsey trained at Laban and has worked with Yael Flexer’s Bedlam Dance Company as a performer and regular teacher since 2001. Lyndsey was a founder member of
Kerry Nicholls Dance Company and has also performed with Shane Shambhu, Nuno Silva, Shift, Sirens Crossing and Transitions. Lyndsey has extensive teaching
experience, working for London Contemporary Dance School, gDA and The Place. She has taught company class for New Adventures, Scottish Dance Theatre and Diversions.
Lyndsey’s class focuses on dynamic use of the body, highlighting weight, suspension and rebound, together with strong articulation and clarity when moving.

16 - 20 February
Kyle Sheldon
Kyle is a New York based dancer and teacher. His teaching credits include Dance City, Ludus Dance and Greenwich Dance Agency. Kyle teaches a Release based class that
focuses on skeletal connections and sequential movement, drawing on all of his experiences in contemporary (Limon and Graham), ballet and yoga.

23 - 27 February
Natalia Thorn
Natalia trained at NSCD, then joined EDge05 at the LCDS. She has performed for Maresa von Stockert's Tilted Productions (2005-8), Kim Brandstrup, Rashpal Singh Bansal and Kate Flatt. She teaches a release class which aims to explore the expressive possibilities of the body.

2 - 6 March
Scottish Dance Theatre
SDT was created in 1986 and has been under the artistic direction of Janet Smith since 1997. In recent years the company has created and performed work by choreographers including Rui Horta, Carol Brown, Darshan Singh Buller, Sean Feldman and Liv Lorent. Dancers from the company and Sally Owen, Assistant Artistic Director will be teaching class which will include ballet for contemporary dancers.

9 - 13 March
Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company
SJDC has been working for 20 years to create engaging performances using music, media and contemporary and Bharata Natyan. The company is based in Islington, London and tours throughout the UK and abroad.
Mandeep Raikhy lives in Delhi, India and began by studying jazz, his subsequent interest in contemporary dance brought him to London where he trained at Laban. Mandeep has taught jazz for two
years in India and Bollywood dance in London. He undertook his first tour with SJDC in spring 2006.

16 - 20 March
Vicky Evans
Vicky trained at LCDS and has worked with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures since 1995, performing in Swan Lake, Cinderella, Nutcracker! The Car Man and Edward Scissorhands. Vicky teaches a
high energy Cunningham based class placing emphasis on dynamic shifts of weight encompassing the use of breath, weight, centre and space as a source and support for movement impulse. You will
explore the moments between movement and stillness to create a powerful and exciting dance quality.
Musicality is a strong influence throughout Vicky’s class.

23 - 27 March
Hannes Langolf
Hannes trained at LCDS before joining the unique European interdisciplinary project D.A.N.C.E. where he was working, creating and performing under the artistic direction of Angelin Preljocaj, Frédéric
Flamand, Wayne McGregor and William Forsythe. He then joined DV8 Physical Theatre in 2007 and is touring internationally in their latest work. His energetic class fuses technical elements with choreographic movement ideas in order to create a physical and challenging vocabulary. The class focuses on speed, change of levels and clarity in direction and orientation. It works its way
from the ground into technical preparations and strengthening exercises and builds up to challenging combinations and jumps.

Live Accompaniment
Alan Lisk
Alan has worked nationally and internationally as an accompanist and composer for dance companies and
schools. He has had publishing deals with Virgin and EMI and regularly composes scores for TV and film. Alan has received a BAFTA nomination for his film scores.

Billy Surgeoner
Billy has accompanied at The Place, Middlesex University and Laban. He has also worked extensively with the Cholmondeleyes and co-wrote the music for Three with Steve Blake. When not working in the dance world Billy plays keyboards for the Pink Floyd tribute band Pink Fraud.

Mark Ball
Mark has been an accompanist at Dance City and has done session work with various groups including Jimmy Somerville. Mark is the composer for Snake-Oil Video Productions and has worked on dance projects with Noah Wallace at METAL, Swing Me High Dance Company and Jemima Hoadley. Mark also works as a jazz musician.

Anna Gillespie
Anna has worked as a musician for dance since 1990. As her formal training was in dance her music is directly influenced by the experience of dancing. She has worked throughout the UK as a dance accompanist and is also involved in English National Ballet’s Education Unit, working both as a workshop musician and composer. Anna also plays the piano with Sexeto Café – a London based salsa band.
